Airway Supportive Care – Supporting Oral Function and Healthy Development
At Pediatric Tongue Tie, we offer airway supportive dental care focused on oral function, growth, and development, for infants, children, and adults alike. This reflects our understanding of how oral structures relate to feeding, breathing, and development across a lifetime.
Our role is to evaluate dental and functional factors that may influence oral posture and breathing patterns, and to provide support within the scope of pediatric dentistry.
What Airway Supportive Care Means in Our Practice
Airway supportive care looks at how the tongue, jaws, and oral habits work together. It does not diagnose sleep apnea or other medical sleep disorders.
Instead, we identify oral patterns that may influence breathing, feeding, or growth, and determine whether dental support or a referral is the right next step.

What We Evaluate
As part of a comprehensive dental assessment, Dr. Martinez, Dr. Kerr, and our team may evaluate:
- Tongue posture and mobility
- Oral resting posture
- Mouth breathing habits
- Dental arch development
- Oral muscle balance
These findings guide treatment planning and referrals when appropriate.
Care Within Our Scope
Airway supportive care in our practice may include:
- Functional assessment of oral structures
- Monitoring dental and facial growth
- Dental appliances, when appropriate, to support oral function
- Collaboration with pediatricians, ENT specialists, orthodontists, and other providers
Airway Supportive Appliances
In select cases, we may recommend dental appliances to support oral posture, guide growth and development, or complement tongue tie treatment.
These appliances are part of a comprehensive dental care plan, focused on function and development. They are not intended to diagnose or treat sleep apnea or other medical sleep disorders.
How This Relates to Tongue Tie
The tongue plays a key role in oral posture and function. When tongue mobility is restricted, some patients develop compensatory habits that affect oral development or breathing patterns.
When appropriate, we coordinate tongue tie treatment with airway supportive care to improve function. Every treatment decision is individualized, based on clinical findings.
Our Philosophy
Our approach to airway supportive care is intentional and thoughtful, guided by current research and clinical evidence, not trends. Every recommendation reflects a child’s individual function and development, and is communicated clearly with families every step of the way.
Practice Notice
This practice provides dental evaluation and airway supportive care. We do not diagnose sleep apnea or other medical sleep disorders. Medical concerns are referred to the appropriate healthcare provider.
